Microwave Ablation

MICROWAVE ABLATION Q&A

WHAT IS MICROWAVE ABLATION AND HOW IS IT USED?

Microwave ablation uses image guidance to place a needle through the skin into a tumor. Microwaves are created in the needle to create a precise, small region of heat which kills the cancer. Because of this microwave ablation is:

  • minimally invasive

  • a “pinhole” procedure

  • a non-surgical treatment

WHAT CANCERS IS MICROWAVE ABLATION USED FOR?

Microwave ablation can be used to treat a variety of tumors including:

  • Liver

  • Kidney

  • Lung

  • Bone

  • Soft tissue

  • Spinal

Microwave ablation can be used to treat and cure cancers. It can also be used to decrease pain caused by certain cancers, for example bone, often spinal cancers.

IS MICROWAVE ABLATION AN OPTION FOR ME?

In certain situations surgery is the best option allowing the cancer to be cut out completely. In other situations microwave ablation or another advanced minimally invasive, “pinhole” procedure may be your best option. Microwave ablation is an effective treatment option if you:

  • are not a good candidate for surgery because your tumor is hard to reach

  • are not a good candidate for surgery because of other medical conditions

  • would not have enough organ left after surgical removal of a cancer

  • have tumors that have not responded to other treatments

  • have several tumors that are spread out making surgical removal Impossible

Imaging & Interventional Specialists - YOUR NON-SURGICAL CANCER SOLUTION

Imaging & Interventional Specialists are experienced and successful in dealing with cancers that are treatable with microwave ablation when that is your best option. Our board-certified interventional specialist physicians offer in-office evaluation, review of your medical records and imaging, and will order diagnostic testing where needed, consult with other treatment providers that may be involved in your care and then will customize a treatment plan to address your cancer. If needed, a surgical consultation can be coordinated.

HOW DO IMAGING & INTERVENTIONAL SPECIALISTS FIND OUT WHETHER MICROWAVE ABLATION IS AN OPTION FOR YOU?

The Imaging & Interventional Specialist team will comprehensively review your medical history, biopsy results, previous imaging and, in consultation with your other treatment providers, determine whether microwave ablation is the best option for you.

WHAT ADVANCED “PINHOLE” PROCEDURES DOES IMAGING & INTERVENTIONAL SPECIALISTS OFFER FOR CANCERS

There are other minimally invasive, “pinhole” procedures that are used to treat cancers. Imaging & Interventional Specialists will determine which minimally invasive vascular interventional radiology (VIR) procedures can address your situation and to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. Treatments can include:

  • Transarterial embolization: A tiny catheter uses your arteries like roads to guide special equipment to the cancer where millions of tiny beads are administered to block the arteries feeding the tumor. Blocking the feeding vessels starves the tumor and it dies.
  • Transarterial chemoembolization: Beads are coated with chemotherapy which can be administered directly into the tumor.
  • Transarterial radioembolization: Beads are coated with radiotherapy which can be administered directly into the tumor.
  • Cryoablation: Like microwave ablation except the tumor is killed by freezing, not heating
