Imaging & Interventional Specialists are experienced and successful in dealing with knee pain. Osteoarthritis (or degenerative joints disease) can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and eventually knee replacement. Recently a new treatment has been developed that bridges between the two options or can even offer an alternative to surgery for knee pain. This “pinhole” procedure is geniculate artery embolization (GAE). Our board-certified vascular physicians offer in office diagnostic testing and will customize a treatment plan to address your knee pain. Our medical team will focus on treating and eliminating or significantly reducing your knee pain.

What are genicular arteries and how are they involved in knee pain?

Genicular arteries are small arteries that supply the knee joint. When a joint is chronically inflamed more blood flows to the knee joint through engorged and proliferated genicular arteries. The enlarged and proliferated vessels cause pain.

Will genicular artery embolization cure my knee pain?

The Imaging & Interventional Specialist team has in office diagnostic technologies to help assess whether genicular artery embolization will be suitable to treat your knee pain. Besides our careful history and physical exam, the team at Imaging & Interventional Specialists may obtain imaging studies such as MRIs to aid with accurate diagnoses and to help develop your treatment plan. If your osteoarthritis/DJD is advanced then we may recommend orthopedic surgery. If not then genicular artery embolization may be for you.

What is genicular artery embolization (GAE)?

GAE is a “pinhole” procedure performed by Imaging & Interventional Specialists. A small needle is used to access your arteries and X-rays guide miniaturized equipment to the genicular artery responsible for your pain. Then tiny particles are selectively injected to slow blood flow to the inflamed areas greatly decreasing pain.
