What are trigger points and how are they caused?
Trigger points are focal, discrete, hyperirritable spots located in a taut band of skeletal muscle. They can cause localized or referred pain and are often associated with chronic musculoskeletal disorders. They can also be caused by acute trauma or repetitive microtrauma. One of the most effective treatment are trigger point injections in which a steroid and local anesthetic are injected.
What are nerve blocks?
A nerve block stops pain by disrupting how pain signals are sent to your brain. Nerve blocks can be used to determine the source of pain, treat painful conditions, to determine how well pain will respond to more long-term treatments. With nerve blocks a local anesthetic with a steroid is injected alongside a targeted nerve under ultrasound guidance.
