WHAT IS TRANSARTERIAL RADIOEMBOLIZATION?

Transarterial radio embolization is a specialized “pinhole” technique  used by imaging and interventional vascular physicians which involves placing a needle is into one  of your arteries and then advancing a tiny  catheter advanced into the artery supplying your tumor.  Tiny beads coated with a chrradiotherapy meeting agent (Yttrium 90) are then slowly introduced into the artery blocking off blood flow as well as delivering internal radiotherapy.   Because the cradiotherapy is delivered in a targeted way directly into the liver cancer it is very effective.  The liver cancer then shrinks and dies.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TRANSARTERIAL RADIOEMBOLIZATION?

Transarterial radioembolization  is a “pinhole” procedure performed by Imaging and interventional specialists whereby a tiny, catheter device is advanced into the artery or artery supplying your liver cancer.  Millions of tiny beads coated with radiotherapy agent deposits in the liver cancers and the cancers are exposed to lethal radiotherapy.  Oftentimes transarterial radio embolization is used in combination in sequence with other liver cancer treatments such as transarterial chemoembolization  and microwave ablation.  The benefits to transarterial radioembolizationinclude

  • Minimally invasive “pinhole” procedure
  • Speedy recovery
  • Targeted treatment of liver cancers.
  • Because the therapy is not systemic but targeted high doses of radiotherapy can be directed at the liver cancer
