What Are Uterine Fibroids And How Are They Caused?

Uterine fibroids are benign lumps (also called leiomyomas) that grow on the uterus. They often develop during childbearing years. Many are small and cause no symptoms. Others become large, distort and enlarge the uterus causing symptoms that include pelvic pain, urge to urinate, heavy or prolonged periods, and cramping. The specific cause is not well understood but includes genetics, hormones, and other growth factors.risk factors include race, heredity, early onset of menses and diet

How Do Imaging & Interventional Specialists Find Out Whether You Have Uterine Fibroids

Often, before you are evaluated by an imaging and interventional specialist, your OB/GYN has diagnosed fibroids and referred to us to treat the fibroids and preserve fertility by preserving the uterus. In other cases the Imaging & Interventional Specialist team will use in-office diagnostic technologies to help assess whether you have fibroids, how severe they are and the best method to treat them.

Besides our careful history and physical exam, the team at Imaging & Interventional Specialists may obtain ultrasound studies and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI ) to aid with accurate diagnoses and help develop your treatment plan, if needed.

What Advanced “Pinhole” Procedure Does Imaging & Interventional Specialists Offer For Varicose Veins

Uterine fibroid embolization (or uterine artery embolization) is a minimally invasive procedure which targets the uterus and shrinks the fibroids by blocking their blood supply and preventing them from growing.

Your interventional and imaging specialist will use a small needle to access your arteries then thread special catheters into the arteries that feed the fibroids before injecting tiny beads that block blood flow and starve the fibroids of nutrients - they shrink markedly eliminating your symptoms.

Imaging & Interventional Specialists offer FDA-approved treatments (non-surgical alternatives).
