What is men’s health?

Men’s health is a branch of medicine that diagnoses, treats, and prevents health problems in men. Studies suggest men are more likely to avoid the doctor and ignore unusual symptoms compared to women. Though there are many reasons for this disparity, it often results in chronic health problems and shorter lifespans.

What happens during a men’s health appointment?

The team at Imaging & Interventional Specialists doesn’t provide primary care. However, if your physician detects a potentially serious health problem, they might refer you to the practice for diagnostic radiology and treatment.

Your provider reviews your medical history at your initial consultation, conducts a physical exam, and asks about your symptoms and lifestyle, including if you smoke, what type of diet you eat, and how often you exercise. Try to answer your provider’s questions as honestly as possible, as your responses play an essential role in guiding treatment.

After gathering the necessary information, your provider can make recommendations to pinpoint the severity of your underlying health problem. These might include X-rays, MRI, ultrasound, or a computed tomography (CT) scan.

Which men’s health problems can benefit from professional treatment?

The team at Imaging & Interventional Specialists provides care for various men’s health problems, including:

Enlarged prostate

The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland responsible for producing fluid that carries sperm from your testes. Almost every man experiences prostate enlargement due to the natural aging process. An enlarged prostate is typically benign (non-cancerous), but it can present uncomfortable symptoms, including incontinence and pain during urination.

Male infertility

Male infertility makes it difficult for you to conceive a child with your partner naturally. There are many causes of male infertility, including low sperm production, abnormal sperm function, and blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Sometimes, male infertility points to a more serious health problem like a tumor or infection.

A varicocele causes one or more of the veins in your testicles to swell. Frequently, this results in low sperm production and low sperm quality. Varicoceles usually develop slowly over an extended period, but with early diagnosis and intervention, they’re easy to treat.

What are the treatments for men’s health problems?

Whenever possible, the team at Imaging & Interventional Specialists uses minimally invasive, pin-hole procedures to address men’s health problems. These treatments allow for quicker recovery, fewer risks, and fewer complications.

If you have an enlarged prostate, the team might recommend prescription medications, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP), or transurethral needle ablation (TUNA).

If you’re experiencing male infertility, the team might recommend a minimally invasive surgery to prevent blockages in the vas deferens. If you have a varicocele, the team might recommend laparoscopic surgery or percutaneous embolization.
